EXPERIMENTS WITH H. M. STEAM VESSEL BEE.
The Admiralty having ordered a small vessel to be fitted by Messrs. Maudslay
and Field, it was resolved that the machinery should be so arranged so as to propel
her either by paddle wheels or the screw of Mr. Smith. The engine (for there is
one only) is of 10 horses’ power, and has paddle wheels attached in the usual
way. The motion is communicated to the screw by an arrangement similar to
the diagram fig. 57, which requires little explanation. The motion is transmitted

from the engine shaft first by bevel wheels and thence to the screw axis e by an
endless band. The screw is constructed like that of the Archimedes.
With this vessel the following trials have been made at the measured mile in
Long Reach, the screw having been removed when the paddles Avere tried, and
the paddles (or those of them which would have been immersed) unshipped A^hen
the screAV was tried.
