4 Finland
owned water power company, Imatran Voima Oy, have acquired photogram-
metric instruments for their special mappings.
In the private field there are three companies, Maasto Oy, Kunnallis-
tekniikka Oy (Finnmap Ltd.) and Maanmittaus- ja Neuvonta Oy (Photogram-
metra) which perform photogrammetric mappings mainly on large scale (1 : 500
— 10 000). Finnmap Ltd. performs also aerial photography using a Pilatus
Porter aeroplane. Photogrammetra has specialized in terrestrial photogrammetry.
Wide angle cameras Zeiss RMK 15/23 (Pleogon) and Wild RC 8 15/23 are
mainly used in aerial photography for aerial triangulation and plotting. Also
aerial pictures taken with normal-angle cameras Zeiss RMK 21/18 (Topar) are
used for compiling the aerophotographic map 1:10 000 which serves as the
basis for the Basic Map of 1 : 10 000. The horizon cameras Zeiss RMK HS 21/18
(Orthometar) and RMK HS 18/18 (Topogon) have been used for special
purposes such as the agricultural taxation.
The National Board of Survey performs its photographic flights with the
two Percival Pembroke planes of its own and with two privately owned Cessna
195 planes.
During the last few years the Air Force has performed photographic flights
at high altitudes (9 000 meters) with a jet plane.
At present the number of stereoplotters is over 50, including 3 Zeiss
stereoplanigraphs (mod. C 5 and C 8), 22 Wild A 7, A 8 or B 8 autographs,
11 Balplex plotters and 12 Zeiss Stereotopes. The types of rectifiers used are
Zeiss SEG V and SEG I.
Wild stereocamera, with the base of 120 cm, and Wild A 4 Autograph are
used by Photogrammetra in terrestrial photogrammetry.
The Finnish Society of Photogrammetry
The Society was founded in 1931 and was accepted as a member in the
International Society for Photogrammetry (ISP) in 1934. On the occasion of the
30th anniversary the Publication N:o 3 of the Society was issued in 1962. At
present the total number of members is 203.
In addition to its ordinary activities the Society has compiled a card index
of about 2 400 cards of photogrammetric literature published before 1958. The
Society has also subscribed to the ITC International Bibliography of Photo
grammetry and Bibliographica Geodaetica (Dresden).
Eng. Major Gen. (ret.) Karl G Lofstrom has been President of the Society
since 1963 after Professor R S Halonen, Dr. Tech.
Mr. S Haggstrom, Dipl. Eng. is Secretary of the Society. The address of the
Society is: Laboratory of Photogrammetry, Institute of Technology, Otaniemi,
Finland.
PRACTICAL WORK
Aerial Photography
The Table attached to the report shows that aerial photography on the
scales of 1 : 3 000 — 1 : 45 000 for various mapping purposes covers annually
about 50 000 — 70 000 sq.kms. Since 1961 high altitude (at 9 000 meters)
photography on the scale of 1 : 60 000 has been carried out for the extension of
ground control, to provide material for small-scale mapping and to bring the
maps up to date. Owing to exceptionally cloudless weather conditions in 1963
aerial photography in that year covered a total of 219 000 sq.kms, which is
more than 60 per cent of the total area of Finland.
