TENTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS
OF PHOTOGRAMMETRY, 1964
INDIAN NATIONAL REPORT
This report covers the period between the Ninth International Congress of Photogrammetry
held in London in 1960 and 31st March, 1964.
I. INTRODUCTION
The Survey of India had been using the simple graphical methods of air survey since the early
twenties. From 1954, the use of precision stereo-plotting instruments has been introduced in the
Department for photogrammetric surveying. Our early experience with photogrammetric methods
has already been reported in our previous national report. In this paper, a detailed account of our
experience with photogrammetry during 1960-64, has been presented.
In the Survey of India, there are, at present, four photogrammetric units engaged in survey
ing using restitution instruments each of which has two Wild A7, four Wild A8, seven Zeiss Stereotopes
and one Radial Secator RS-I. In the remaining survey parties, the Arundel method of graphical air
survey is used with local variations. M/s. Air Survey Company Private Ltd., Dum Dum, Calcutta
have two Williamson Ross S.P. 3 Multiplex instruments which are engaged on photogrammetric
survey of development projects.
The utility and advantages of photo interpretation techniques in their applications to various
disciplines such as forestry, soil survey and geological investigations have been recognized and a begin
ning has been made in some of these departments.
II. AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Aerial photographs are being widely used in India these days for the preparation of topogra
phical maps on different scales and contour intervals. A start has also been made for the use of aerial
photographs for the assessment and development of the natural resources, namely, land resources,
mineral resources and forest resources. The demands for aerial photography from the different
indenting departments in India are received in the Survey of India where a co-ordination of scales
is achieved and aerial photographic specifications are designed. There are two agencies in India
who carry out the aerial photographic tasks, namely the Indian Air Force and M/s. Air Survey
