A method of block adjustment for heights, with results obtained in the international
test
The report of the National Research Council of Canada on its participation in the Inter
national Test on Block Adjustment was restricted to the adjustment of plane coordinates. Sub
sequent to this participation, a program for three-dimensional strip adjustment,, including cor
rection of strip deformation, and a program for block adjustment of heights have been written.
These programs make use of polynomial, where possible conformal, transformations for the
correction of longitudinal and transversal bend, torsion, and variation in scale and azimuth of
a strip. In the program for block adjustment of heights, as in a new program for the block ad
justment of plane coordinates, the iterative solution has been abandoned in favour of a direct
solution of the complete system of normal equations for all strips.
The present paper lists the formulas that are used in these adjustments and gives a
short description of the basic features of these programs. The programs have now been used
to perform the height adjustment for the International Test.
For each of the three sets of measurements, four adjustments have been performed.
In each adjustment, twenty-seven height control points in three lines across the strips have
been used, with in addition either one or both of the following two sets : seven control points at
a short distance from the three lines and four control points in the first and the last strip mid
way between the three lines. For longitudinal bend, corrections of either the 4th or the 5th de
gree have been given. For torsion, a linear correction has been given. The results can be sum
marized as follows :
