Fill-in is usually performed immediately after completion 
of the automatic compilation. The fill-in program is entered 
into the computer, and the fill-in coordinate record tape is 
placed on the tape reader. At operator command, the computer 
sequentially reads the coordinates of each gap and positions 
the floating mark at the point where automatic plotting was 
resumed. For fill-in of automatic contour and profile records, 
the operator plots across the missing portions of the compila- 
tion, observing completion on the coordinatograph. During 
orthophoto fill-in, where the output compilation is not visible, 
travel during printing is restricted by the computer between 
the start and end points of each gap. The computer controls 
the Y-motion in traversing the gap, while the operator controls 
elevation. At the option of the operator, the computer auto- 
matically controls elevation across the gap as a linear inter- 
polation between the recorded elevations at the end points. 
If desired, the form-line contour generator can be turned off 
during manual fill-in. 
59. Manpower Support Requirements: The AS-11A or AS-11B/C 
can be operated by a single operator. It has been found, however, 
that optimum utilization of AS-11A equipment time requires an 
investment of about 2.25 employees per instrument. This factor 
includes allocation of time for vacation, sick leave, etc. It 
is estimated that this factor will drop slightly for the AS-11B/C. 
This is because the operator is now free to perform some of the 
constant data calculations, manuscript finishing, etc., during 
the operation of the automatic modes. If the option to calculate 
model deformation corrections is exercised, off-line, general 
purpose computer support is required. The automated system will 
speed up output and reduce operator support requirements. It 
will also, however, increase off-line support requirements in 
the final manuscript preparation phases. 
  
It presently requires 12 weeks of training on a AS-11A 
to produce a journeyman compiler who works under the direction 
of a senior AS-11A system operator. The AS-11B/C is a considerably 
more complex instrument than the AS-11A. In addition to the 
knowledge required to operate the analytical plotter control 
computer, viewer and coordinatograph; there is now electronic 
correlation, orthophotoscope and magnetic tape unit equipment 
to comprehend. It is estimated that four weeks of training of 
an experienced AS-11A operator on the AS-11B/C should make a 
journeyman AS-11B/C operator. This does not represent a 1007 
proficient operator, but one that can function in such a manner 
that he can bring himself to the 100% level. 
60. Test Results: In automatic contouring and profiling 
operations, the accuracy of the AS-11B/C is consistent with that 
of the manually operated AS-11A. Mean elevation errors of 0.015 
to 0.030 millimeter are typical for contours and profiles auto- 
matically plotted from materials having scale factors of 1:40,000 
or smaller. This represents a 'C" factor between 1500 and 3,000, 
based on profile analysis. Plotting is performed at speeds up to 
10 millimeters per second, with the speed being automatically
