REPORT OF THE CHIEF OF THE ITALIAN DELEGATION AT THE
FIRST SESSION OF THE VII CONGRESS ON PHOTOGRAMMETRY
by
Paolo Dore.
The president of the Italian Society of Photogrammetry, Professor Boaga,
having returned to Italy for official reasons, is not here and we have not
received his report.
The report which I read to you was repeated at the last moment on the
information which was disclosed here to the General Secretary of the Society;
I wish to be forgiven if anything is omitted in handling the letter.
Now we have begun in the reorganization of the Society. As a consequence
of the events of the last war, the former Società Italiana di Fotogrammetria
“Ignazio Porro” no longer exists. The Italian Commission of Geodesy formed
a Committee of Photogrammetry charged with the coordination and, possibly,
the organization of study and research in the field of photogrammetry in ex
pectation of the reconstruction of a new National Society on new bases.
This reconstruction resulted in 1951 in the creation of the “Società Itali
ana di Fotogrammetria e Topographia” (S.I.F.E.T.), which permitted the Com
mission on Geodesy to dissolve the Committee of Photogrammetry which had
accomplished its task. The new society has had a very rapid and remarkable
development. In fact, after but two years of activity, the number of members
has climbed to 2460; the Society is governed by a central counsel of direction
which meets in Rome. The sections, which number 38 at present, are composed
of chairmen in place of departments. The liaison between the sections are held
together chiefly by the “Bulletin of S.I.F.E.T.”, the quarterly journal which
has as its fundamental idea the publishing of discussions, whether scientific or
technical, which are interesting from the point of view of photogrammetry
and topography. It is hoped that this journal will satisfy the majority of
Italian techniques and not specialize in the interest of a single technical activity
such that photogrammetry will meet with enthusiasm and force in governmen
tal institutions, instrument makers and private enterprise.
Here are given the principal subjects of this work:
Italian instrument makers have developed a remarkably fine activity since
1948. Two new stereoscopic plotting instruments have been developed: the
Nistri Photocarograph Model B and the Santoni Stereocarograph Simplex
Model III. Others also should be mentioned, such as the new Santoni solai-
camera and the solar calculator, the new Nistri multiplex, etc., etc.
The production of large and small scale maps is also noteworthy.
The cadastral mapping administration has employed aerial photographs
using the methods illustrated at preceding congresses, covering a total of
25 km 2 : the scales used vary from 1/1000 to 1/4000.
The maps generally have been arranged to be compiled by private mapping
companies. The average planimetrie error must not be more than that set for
ordinary topographic maps, whereas the average vertical error must not be
more than ± 0.70 m for non-rugged terrain.
