NATIONAL REPORT OF EL SALVADOR

Ladies and Gentlemen:
I have come from a very small country of America where, because of the
dense population and the lack of natural resources, it is necessary for us to use
what we have to the greatest advantage.
You may be better able to judge the citizens of El Salvador, however, if
you are cognizant of the facts that the country has a favorable monetary balance
and it ranks third among the World coffee producers, if you will forgive my
boasting.
The Government of El Salvador, realizing that it is not possible to plan
and develop the country properly without good maps, organized a Director
General of Cartography, with the objective of producing all required maps
with a regular annual budget amounting to about one percent of the total
budget of the country.
Consequently it has been possible for this country to acquire: surveying
instruments (theodolites and levels); a Cessna two-engine photographic air
plane; a K-17 aerial camera, one Wild A-5 and one Wild A-6 stereoscopic plott
ing instruments; two Multiplex bars with six projectors; and 22 automobiles,
consisting of Jeeps, Willys pick-ups, power wagons, etc.
The Government of the United States has generously co-operated with
our leaders through the medium of the Inter-America Geodetic Survey, giving
equipment of all types and expert personnel when it was needed.
The program actually developing is as follows: 1 : 100.000 and 1 : 200.000
planimetric maps; 1 : 50.000 topographic maps of the country, 1 : 5000 topo
graphic and cadastral maps in the coastal zones; and 1 : 1000 and 1 : 500 topo
graphic maps of the cities of San Salvador and Santa Tecla; and planimetric and
topographic maps of other populated areas and official institutions where
needed.
In the coastal zone maps are being made of 500 km 2 of Bajo Lempa for
irrigation with a canal having a capacity of 50 m 3 per minute fed from the
Chorrera Dam of Guayabo which is under construction.
During recent years work has been progressing on the basic triangulation
control scheme, third-order leveling, third-order traverses, and horizontal and
vertical control points.
This year 91 triangulation stations have been established; 700 km of first-
order levels; 700 km of third-order levels; 600 km of third-order traverse,
including 400 vertical and horizontal control points.
Two-shift operation of the plotting instruments is being practiced.
This is my report of the cartographic work in El Salvador.
I wish to convey the greetings of my contry to all the distinguished dele
gates and the best wishes for a successful Congress.
