Petroleum Maatschappij (Royal Dutch/Shell Group) and for other public
agencies in the Netherlands. K.L.M. Aerial Surveys act as a normal com-
mercial enterprise, doing for the territory of the Netherlands work similar to
that carried out by the S.D.M.P.W. They also act as contractors for aerial
photography and all kinds of aerial surveys in overseas territories and foreign
countries.
CHAPTER II — AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY.
Aerial photography for construction and revision of the military topo-
graphic maps is carried out on the scale of 1 : 20,000, camera Wild RC 5 with
Aviotar lens. Practically the whole of the Netherlands has been covered by
recent photographs of high quality, the last part of the country having been
completed last spring.
Special flights are made for revision of cadastral maps, for re-allotment
and for various engineering purposes on scales from 1:17,500 to 1 : 5,000.
All aerial photography in the Netherlands for photogrammetric purposes, both
for the military topographic maps and for other purposes, is carried out by
K.L.M. Aerial Surveys from the airport of Schiphol.
All these photographs were taken with Wild RC 5, size of the image
18 X 18 cm. on films 19 cm. wide, lens Aviotar 210 mm. By the end of the
period covered by this report, K.L.M. Aerial Surveys had put into use a Wild
RC 7 plate camera, Aviotar 170 mm., plate size 15 X 15 cm., and since then
only this plate camera has been and will be used for all large-scale work. This
camera was introduced owing to the preference of map-producing agencies
for glass plates rather than films.
The aircraft used by K.L.M. Aerial Surveys, both in the Netherlands
and abroad, are Dakotas with a normal speed of 250 km. per hour at sea level,
a surface ceiling of 6500 m., and a crew of 4 or 5 men. For large-scale map-
ping in the Netherlands with the RC 7 camera, K.L.M. will use in the near
future a De Havilland Domini, this being a smaller plane with less speed than
the Dakota.
Besides the work in the country itself, the Royal Dutch/Shell Group is
carrying out work for its own geological and topographic purposes in various
other countries of the world. The cameras used by Royal Dutch/Shell Group
are Williamson OSC 1 with Ross wide-angle 6-inch survey lens and Zeiss
RMK P 10 with Zeiss Topogon 100 mm. The size of the images is 9 X 9 inches
for the OSC and 18 X 18 cm. for the P 10. K.L.M. is undertaking aerial
surveys as a contractor for governments and companies abroad. This private
company is working exclusively with Wild RC 5 cameras with either 210 mm.
Aviotar or 115 mm. wide-angle lens.
