Vegetation maps, scale 1 : 200.000, are being compiled. Detailed fieldwork
is executed, but the aerial photographs make it possible to generalize them
considerably and accelerate the investigations.
Germany:
(a) Shortly before and during the war plotting of aerial photographs
under the superintendence of the »Reichsforstamt» was made to a large
extent, especially for mapping of nearly all forests on a photo-scale of
1:18.000. The plotting was mostly executed centrally. After the war the
following area was phctographed from the air for forestry purposes:
1950 about 15.000 hectares
1951 4» 400.000 »
(b The photographs were mostly on a scale of 1 :15.000 to 1 : 18.000.
The plotting was made by the aid of stereoscopes, sketchmasters (preferably
epidiascopic ones), sometimes rectifiers, pocket stereometers, stereopan-
tometers etc. were used.
(c) Stereoscopic plotting for interpretation, rectifying of single pictures
1: 5.000, transparent material.
(d). The same accuracy as that of the surrounding areas formerly sur-
veyed was required.
(e) Time-studies and price investigations are not yet achieved.
(f) A tendency prevails to extend the simple plotting made by forestry
people. Sterecscopic measurements are made for scientific forestry pur-
poses.
Israel:
The Israel reporter states:
Up till now in our country, as it has been mostly arid and without old
forests, nothing has been done in this line, except a few maps of young
forest areas we prepared for the forest department of the Agricultural
Ministry, with Jeep trails and fire lines which have been successfully and
very cheaply planned by photogrammetric methods.
No organization for research in forest photogrammetry or training in
it exists yet in our country. Extensive work has been made only by
counting of clive tree forests and of citrus plantation from aerial photos,
and also for sick or dying trees in the citrus plantation areas; all this
for the purposes of yield for the agricultural settlement department.
Italy:
In 1950 there were started for the first time in Italy, official experiments
to find out the possibilities of photogrammetry in forestry. This was the
result of an agreement between the director general of the Italian Land
Survey and the director general of the Italian forests. The experiment was
made on an area of totally 5.000 hectares in the Abetone forest (in the
province of Pistoria), which belongs to the State.
