COMMISSION VI
DOCUMENTATION OF TECHNICAL LITERATURE#
by

A. ABSTRACT
This paper describes the author's method of preparing
document catalogue cards and using them as a subject-matter
index to the available literature regarding photogrammetry
and the related arts and sciences. Appendix A of this paper
contains his subject-matter index which resembles the well
known Dewey and UDC decimal systems, and Appendix B gives a
useful alphabetical cross-index.
B. INTRODUCTION
The available literature on the subject of photogram-
metry and the related arts and sciences is so large, and is
accumulating so rapidly that it is not practical for us to
read all of this material or to remember all of the informa-
tion that may eventually possess some unforseen value to us.
Many of us must be prepared to undertake a wide variety of
new technical problems upon rather short notice, In order
to successfully accomplish these unexpected assignments with
a minimum amount of delay, it is therefore necessary for us
to be able to make effective use of the available technical
literature on the subject.
In order to read all of the published literature regard-
ing photogrammetry, we would have to master a number of dif-
ferent languages and then spend most of our working hours
reading various magazines and books on the subject. In order
to avoid all this trouble, there are periodicals in many
fields of scientific endeavor which are devoted to printing
abstracts. For example, about 16,000 scientists subscribe to
a monthly bulletin called "Chemical Abstracts." When a chem-
