Mr. P. Hjelmstrôm: I just want to make a few short remarks about, a topic
that has been mentioned before. I refer to the new ideas that have been coming
up in the last years to explain imaging processes by general information theo
ries. In optics as well as in photography we have found, and there is laboratory
work going on in several places on the basis of these theories, we have found
the communication theory very useful as applied to these things. From electri
cal engineering we have borrowed a few notions such as communication
channel, signal, signal strength, noise and noise strength, and that is easily
translated into optical and photographical language and so we could take sever
al advantages by the mathematical methods to handle these situations. In fact,
I believe that this method, that is carried out by Fourrier transformation, con
tains as a main idea a dualism consisting, on one side, of the wave form and on
the other side, of the spectrum and the transforming is done by the Fourrier
transformation between these two »spaces» so-to-say. Thanks to this mathe
matical means and thanks to these basic ideas we could get a fairly good grasp
of the whole situation and not only determine such things as accuracy based
on the definitions of these testing methods, but we could attack the whole
problem in the light of the new concepts. We could in the end not only test the
lenses and the cameras but also the whole testing procedure and measure what
amount of information is obtained. It is a pity that we could not avoid such
situations as those where we have to choose between getting very much infor
mation in a very little place or very little information in a large place. But I
think that thanks to information theory, one would be able not only to choose
the right testing methods, but also to make a final decision on how future
developments shall look.
The Chairman reports briefly on the first meeting of a group of experts from Commission I,
who try to improve the draft standards for testing lenses and cameras, and to establish a closer
cooperation between specialised laboratories. The work done by these few experts should contribute
