Some Research in Aerial Triangulation
The authors first recall the method of adjustment which was studied in the Military Geographic
Institute about 1950, and which depended on 3rd degree curves.
It was replaced, as early as 1951, by another one of which the characteristics, after several
improvements, are as follows.
1. It uses, as variables, the scale and the rotations round the 3 axes.
2. Each pair possesses its own transformation formulae.
3. Each strip is tied to the ground by means of known points of its extreme pairs, and the
successive pairs are connected to each other.
4. It is possible to take into account every intermediate ground support. 1
5. It is possible to cancel the discrepancies between adjacent strips without ruining their internal
connexions.
In order to obtain such results, the fundamental formulae are differentiated, providing thus
relations between small variations of the several variables.
The accumulation of these small variations supplies closing conditions.
The accumulation of the same, on a common point, computed in two adjacent strips, supplies a
connexion equation between these two strips.
Computations are carried out by means of the method of least squares.
Some approximations lead to considerable simplification.
The president announces that the session of Commission III will continue as a common session
with the Commissions II and IV, devoted to papers concerning the controlled tests Nos. 1 and 2.
The session, adjourned at 10 o’clock, is continued at 10.15 under the présidence of Mr. Bachmann
(Switzerland) who is president of Commission II and charged with the general organization of the
controlled tests. He gives a brief exposure of the arrangements made at the meeting at Gunten
in 1954.
1 The authors deliberately use the term »ground support» instead of the usual one »ground
control», because, in their minds a »control point» must needs be a point which has not been used
for the adjustment of the strip. Such a point then provides a real control of the accuracy of the
results.
