Activities and Products
Fairey Air Surveys Limited, together with their associated companies
in Canada, Rhodesia, India and Pakistan, provide a world-wide service
of aerial photography, photogrammetric mapping, geophysical and
resources surveys. Fairey Air Surveys Limited forms part of the Fairey
Group, in which other members are aviation companies in Canada,
Belgium, and Australia.
During the past four years some 250,000 square miles have been photo
graphed by Fairey Air Surveys alone, and to this must be added photo
graphic projects in India and Canada. During this period the Company
has been concerned with mapping of important projects in nearly every
part of the world, from the mapping in 1956 of the Kariba Hydro-electric
project in central Africa to more recent pioneering surveys in the United
Kingdom into the use of photogrammetry in highways construction. They
have also undertaken project surveys designed to apply the speed and
economy of photogrammetric methods to the increasing world demand for
rapid land tenure surveys. These have been particularly valuable in newly
developing territories, where the requirement for individual title has far
outstripped the availability of qualified ground surveyors.
Stand 307—cont.
During the first two years of the Intercongress period Fairey Air Surveys
undertook and completed a consultancy agreement with the National
Cartographic Centre of Iran, and during the last two years they have been
engaged by the Government of Burma and have achieved photographic
cover of more than 170,000 square miles in that country.
The operational activities of Fairey Air Surveys are particularly well
supported by a Research Division, which has been concerned with such
problems as film distortion, camera calibration and the design and
manufacture of anti-vibration mountings for aerial cameras. Some of
this equipment will be on display at the Exhibition, where the Research
Division’s exhibit will also include other equipment designed and manu
factured by Fairey Air Surveys Limited. There will be, for example, a
lightweight, 9 in. x 9 in. field contact printer, a continuous film printer for
35 mm. and 70 mm. sizes, and a cartographic photo-composing machine
of a unique design.
