COMMISSION I. PHOTOGRAPHY & NAVIGAT | ON

RAPPORT EUR: Mr. P.M. Smuts
During the past four years an area of nearly one million square kilo-
metres was photographed for governmental bodies. The scale of photograph
varied from 1/20 000 to 1/60 000. The small scale photography is used
primarily for the production of 1/50 000 topographic maps whilst the
larger scale photography is used by the Department of Agriculture and
Census as well as by many private users. All this photography was taken
by private air survey companies making use of I2 so-called distortion
free 150mm focal length cameras and 10 super-wide angled 88mm focal length
cameras. Limited use was made of colour and false colour photography for
agricultural research and forestry purposes.
Research was undertaken in the field of optical transfer functions by the
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research which body completed a
circular questionnaire for the Secretary of Commission | of the Internat-
ional Society of Photogrammetry.
There is no record of any research work in the fields of airborne or
photographic equipment, image location, image quality, navigation equip-
ment or stereoscopy.
