In the development of plotting methods, special attention is being given to the development of digital models
of the terrain. Several trials have been conducted, particularly on large scales, with data processing followed
by drafting by automatic coordinatographs.
Another procedure classifiable as automated consists of digitizing and suitably processing the information
contained in the manuscripts, and automatically drafting or scribing the colors to appear in the reproduction.
6. Photographic interpretation
Over the last four years, there has been a considerable increase in the number of government agencies and
private concerns using these techniques as a part of their standard procedures. The government agencies include:
— Geographic and Cadastral Institute.
— Army Map Service.
— Geological Service of the Ministry of Public Works.
— Geological and Mining Institute.
— Atomic Energy Board.
— Institute of Agricultural Research.
— Institute of Forestry Research and Experimentation.
— Institute of Scientific Research.
— Institute of Soil Science.
— Institute of Applied Geography.
— Various University Departments.
Aide from the several important studies which have been conducted in various scientific fields, research and
application of the new systems of remote sensing was begun during this period, in the form of a thermographic
flight along the coasts of the Canary archipelago to locate points of influx of fresh water into the ocean and make
geothermal maps. À committee was also set up to handle the programming and processing of the information
transmitted by the ERTS project satellites relative to specific areas of Spanish territory.
7. Training
Instruction in photogrammetry is given at the following schools:
I. School of Geodesy and Topography of the Army
— Course in Advanced Photogrammetry for student geodesists.
— Course in basic photogrammetry for student military topographers.
— Special courses in photographic interpretation.
2. School of Topographical Engineering
This school’s curriculum includes:
— First-year program: Photographic interpretation.
— Second-year program: Photogrammetry.
— Third-year program: Aplications of photogrammetry.
Photogrammetry is also included in the curricula of most Schools of Engineering, and the Polytechnical
Institute has recently run complementary seminars on this topic.
