SPECIAL PROJECTS
The following two projects have been selected as being representative of the © e
large number of reported mapping projects of special interest.
In Mexico, a new government agency has been established with the aim of mapping
the country (2 million sa. Km) within a period of 10 years. The programme
requires the simultaneous production of five different editions of the
1:50.000 maps, namely for topographic, geologic, land use, soils and agricultural
purposes.
The U.S.A. reports the execution of a significant mapping project involving
the simultaneous analytical block adjustment of various scales of existing
photography. For interpretation purposes, the project also included infra-red
photography, infra-red and ultraviolet scanning and a terrain probing technique
developed by the contractor. Whilst the results of the latter were marginal,
the other sensors proved to be of significant value.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
a) Multi-purpose mapping
Whilst nearly all mapping agencies have to adhere to national specifications eo e
established in order to fulfil requirements in terms of map standard and
10.
content, an encouraging trend is reported in countries such as Mexico,
Netherlands, South Africa and the U.K. towards a more critical examination
of these specifications. In the Netherlands, user requirements concerning
map content are determined by means of questionnaires and, where feasible,
these will be incorporated in the product. South Africa, Sweden and the U.S.A.
report revisions being made to their specifications, in the latter case, only
in terms of the resolution of photography for the production of orthophoto
maps.
b) Special purpose mapping
Although most countries report that special purpose mapping is carried out
to suit the specific requirements of the user, nevertheless both South
Africa and the United Kingdom report that the user is becoming more critical
and demanding in the private sector, there being a marked increase in the
amount of discussion between marketing staff and potential map users with
respect to technical specifications. | e &
