1. INTRODUCTION
Photogrammetric mapping usually represents the first phase of
technical projects or of national development programs of a much broader
Scope. In general, such projects or programs are intended to improve
the economy of a local region, and consequently the national and even
the world's economy. From this follows that the photogrammetric map-
ping phase as part of a more global project or development program
also affects these various economies. It is the purpose of this pa-
per to elaborate to some extent on these questions. In particular we
Shall be concerned with the macro-economic aspects of photogrammetric
mapping, i.e. with studies concerning the effect of photogrammetric
mapping on the national as well as the international economy.
In dealing with this subject it is indispensable to evaluate
first the national surveying and mapping potential of the country or
of the countries in question. The knowledge of this potential will
then allow us to evaluate or estimate the contribution of photogram-
metric mapping to the national economy.
2. THE IMPACT OF SURVEYING AND MAPPING IN GENERAL AND OF PHOTOGRAM-
METRIC SURVEVING AND MAPPING IN PARTICULAR ON THE NATIONAL AND
WORLD'S ECONOMY.
One way to express the national surveying and mapping potential
is in terms of annual expenditures and manpower involved. The deter-
mination of this potential on a world-wide basis is a gigantic task.
