IN CONCLUSION
From an engineering point of view
At the disposal of the engineers within the MTC are very large
digital computing facilities - our engineers would like to make
more use of these facilities, The computers have never been
able to effectively "read and digest" the graphical two dimensional
plans produced in the conventional photogrammetric process. Our
system produces a magnetic tape in the line function operation of
getting from the ground to the final plan. This tape can be used
as a digital representation of the terrain on the computer. The
engineers look toward the time in the near future when most of
their engineering activity will be performed in digital manner with
the aid of the computer by using CRTs and other available auto-
mated techniques.
From a mapping point of view
This MTC system, for the first time, offers the utopian possibility
of using all large scale maps or plans to update all small scale
maps. Only a computer manipulation is required between each
scale of mapping. Maps now fit into an overall system - see
Figure 10 - Hierarchy of Data Bases,
The ""map' now can be considereu is a magnetic tape or as digits on a
computer media. Inherent in this "'map' is the ability to provide the
user with any map to the SCALE, CONTENT, DENSITY, SYMBOL, AREA, e
