DISTINGUISHING THE DEFORMATIONS OF ARCHITECTURAL
AND PHOTOGRAMMETRIC GEOMETRY

Among the more rigorous subjects of photogrammetric investigation in architecture are measurements of small
structural movements and deformations of architectural geometry. These must be distinguished from deformations of
photogrammetric geometry, particularly caused by radial error from lack of flatness of photogrammetric plates and
emulsions. An effective adjustment procedure for measuring small movements in large structure during a time interval
requires isolation of relative radial errors which are essentially disturbing the interior orientation of the photogramme-
tric camera.
In other applications of architectural photogrammetry in which radial error is not isolated the resulting deforma-
tions of stereophotogrammetric geometry are magnified by relatively short bases between camera stations with acute con-
vergence of lines of sight, by wide-angle photography necessary for photographic coverage, and by great depth of plotting
and sometimes of distance from survey control within complex optical models.
It has been useful to consider the systematic deformations caused by individual uncorrected elements of interior
and exterior orientation through whole series of horizontal and vertical planes in the optical model in positions typical of
architectural surfaces and edges above, below, parallel and normal to the base between camera positions, and to contrast
these with those deformations which most often occur in architectural structure.
Distortions of Geometry in the Optical Model
In stereophotogrammetric plotting of architectural subjects at a first order instrument
such as the Wild A7 Autograph there are some optical models in which architectural surfaces
prove to be plane, and major edges are vertical or horizontal, and the measuring mark may run
in one coordinate direction along a roof ridge with deflections and slight swells rising again to
the mark indicating the location of regularly-spaced trusses beneath the roof surface ; and there
can be pleasure in the integrity of architectural and photogrammetric geometry.
