MAN-MACHINE PHOTOGRAMMETRIC SYSTEMS
AND SYSTEM COMPONENTS
Under the influence of ideas from control and communication theory new trends have developed in the design
of photogrammetric data processing systems. In this paper a number of concepts applied to the design of such
systems are discussed, with emphasis on the digtal man-machine systems and system components. The main
characteristics of contemporary photogrammetric systems are outlined both in regard to their hardware and
software, including some remarks on automation and orthophoto-techniques. The general descriptions are
supported by examples from two systems, one predominantly digital and the other predominantly analog.
These examples concern the instrumental developments in the Photogrammetric Research laboratories of the
National Research Council of Canada.

THE IMAGE PROCESSING SYSTEM FOR THE
EARTH RESOURCES TECHNOLOGY SATELLITE
The Image Processing System of the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) will process video-tape
recordings received from the satellite into imagery and digitized video data suitable for earth-resource study
and analysis. The system is made up of three subsystems. The Bulk Processor produces 70-millimeter images
and digitized records, corrected for systematic geometric and radiometric errors as well as for sensor-
calibration and other errors. The Precision Processor modifies the bulk images to significantly increase
geometric and radiometric precision. The Special Processor transfers the bulk or precision data to computer-
compatible tape. This paper describes the performance of the Image Processing System and discusses some of
the design trade-offs that were required to achieve this performance.

NON-HOLOGRAPHIC COHERENT OPTICAL CORRELATION
FOR AUTOMATIC STEREOPERCEPTION
An increasing demand for topographic maps made from aerial stereophotographs has prompted the
development of automatic stereo-perception equipment to speed map production. To date, automation has
been achieved most successfully using electronic correlators and scanners. This paper presents the results of a
study that was conducted to determine the feasibility of applying non-holographic coherent optical correlation
techniques to the task. It describes an experimental optical photogrammetric two-image correlator capable of
automatic optical tracking of stereo-images and of measuring relative stereo-image distortion. The optical
measurement concepts involved are discussed, and hardware and optical-system performances are analyzed.
Areas of work still to be undertaken are touched on briefly.

PHOTOGRAMMETRIC SOLUTION FOR
PRECISION PROCESSING OF ERTS IMAGES
The imagery, formed aboard the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) by the Return Beam Vidicon
(RBV) cameras and by the Multi-spectral Scanning System (MSS), is radio transmitted to the earth and
displayed by special reproducers. In the course of these operations, its geometry will be considerably distorted
due to several factors. The character of the distortion depends mainly on the geometrical properties of the
imaging systems and on the dynamic flight conditions. The geometry of both imaging systems is analyzed, and
an appropriate analytical solution proposed that can provide corrections necessary for the precision processing
