SOCIAL EVENTS 
The Social Events’ Section of the Congress Com- 
mittee had arranged a series of social events for 
the entertainment of the congress participants: 
— Official Reception given by the City of Helsin- 
ki (appr. 1400 participants) 
— Archipelagian Cruise to see the extensive ar- 
chipelago spreading in front of Helsinki and to 
land on some island to study its shores and na- 
ture (400) 
— Jazz Vesper with Finnish soloists in the mod- 
ern Taivallahti Church built in the rock of Temp- 
peliaukio (200) 
— Open-Air Folk Festival on the island Seura- 
saari, itself a beautispot of nature inside the City 
of Helsinki, presenting old Finnish culture and 
architecture, to celebrate a traditional Finnish 
Folk Festival with social games, contests and 
performances of groups of artists welcoming the 
guests to join in (1100) 
— Exhibitors’ Party in Dipoli sponsored by the 
major exhibitors (1200) 
— Hike and Sauna in Salmi, a recreation area of 
the Gity of Helsinki, for hiking in the woods and 
walking along the lake sides (200) 
— Banquet held at Kalastajatorppa, the Fisher- 
mann's Cottage, to end the tightly scheduled 
two-week working period (480) 
PROGRAM FOR ACCOMPANYING PERSONS 
The Accompanying Persons Section of the Con- 
gress Committee had arranged quite a numger 
of occasions for the about 400 family members 
of the congressists. For the first time in the ISP 
Congresses there was program also for the youth 
and the children, e.g. riding and scouting camps. 
The following events were offered: 
— Welcoming Luncheon to all registered Ac- 
companying Persons given by the Ladies' Com- 
mittee (300) 
— Sightseeing Helsinki—Tapiola Garden City. 
The sites visited in Helsinki among others were 
the lively Market Place, the modern Taivallahti 
Church built in rock, the impressive Sibelius Mo- 
nument, and the Olympic Stadium (150) 
— Excursions to Hvitträsk, the home and studio 
of architects Eliel Saarinen, Armas Lindgren and 
Herman Gesellius. Hvitträsk itself, built of logs 
and natural stone, is one of the outstanding ar- 
chitectural creations of the turn of the century

— Excursion to Medieval Porvoo, which has 
maintained its small-town atmosphere with its 
wooden houses, and to Haikko Mansion, a high- 
class health resort (60) 
— Art Visit to Tarvaspää to see the collection of 
works by Akseli Gallén-Kallela, among other 
things the illustrator of the Finnish national epic 
"Kalevala", and to the Didrichsen Art Museum to 
see its small but versatile collection of both Fin- 
nish and exotic art, e.g. Chinese and Pre-Colum- 
bian (50)

— Talk on Helsinki by Professor Eino E. Suolahti, 
containing interesting information about Helsin- 
ki and its cultural history (350) 
— Home Hospitality in the form of coffee parties 
in private homes after the talk (200) 
— Illustrated Lecture on Finnish folklore, old 
traditions, and traditional housing (330) 
— Fashion Show in Dipoli, a representative col- 
lection of Finnish furs, dresses, outfits and jew- 
elry (140) 
— Introduction to Finnish Design, arts and crafts, 
with visits to various places of interest (110) 
— Country Tour including a visit in the City of 
Lohja and its 14th century church and a trip to 
the agricultural parish Vihti, where two farms 
were visited (80) 
— Cruise to Suomenlinna Fortress, a maritime 
fortification on a rocky island, constructed in the 
18th century in defence of Helsinki (60) 
— Excursion to the home of Sibelius, Ainola, 
situated 30 km north of Helsinki, along the shores 
of the beautiful Tuusulanjärvi (40) 
TOURS 
Arranged by the Travel Agency Area: 
Tours during the Congress 
— Sightseeings Helsinki—Tapiola to see the ar- 
chitectural sites of Helsinki and to visit the Gar- 
den City Tapiola 
— Hämeenlinna—Silverline by coach via Hyvin- 
kää with its modern church to Aulanko, a popular 
holiday resort, and a boat trip along the beautiful 
Silverline route 
— Excursions to Turku, the former capital and 
oldest city of Finland, to see the castle and the 
cathedral from the 13th century and the Handi- 
craft Museum 
— Lahti and Lake Vesijarvi to visit the well-known 
winter sports centre Lahti and to see the south- 
ern part of Lake Paijanne district with typical 
Finnish lake scenery 
Weekend tours 
— Lakeside Weekend—Kerimáki starting with a 
flight to Savonlinna in midst of Lake Saimaa dis- 
trict and a weekend in Kerimáki surrounded by 
beautiful scenery 
— Weekend in Lapland starting with a flight to 
Rovaniemi, just south of the Artic Circle, fol- 
lowed up by a tour to some fells 
Post-congress tours 
— Leningrad Cruise by Bore lll (3 days) or alter- 
natively Leningrad Tour by motorcoach (4 days) 
to see the sights of Leningrad, e.g. the Hermit- 
age Art Museum, and Peterhof, the summer resi- 
dence of Peter the Great, famous for its 140 foun- 
tains and statues 
— Lakeside Week in Hankasalmi (7 days) to spend 
a really relaxing week surrounded by nature with 
good possibilities to out-door activities
