Use of the Technical Research Centre of Finland.
Research has been vigorous also in different governmental organizations
and educational institutions. Research carried out in private engineering
firms is also worth mentioning.
The most important governmental bodies using photogrammetry have been
the National Board of Survey, the Topographic Service of the Defense
Forces, the National Board of Public Roads and Waterways, the Geological
Survey of Finland, and the Finnish Forest Research Institute. Furthermore,
there are six private companies in the country with photogrammetric applicati
as a significant part of their production: Oy Kunnallistekniikka Ab
(Finnmap), Maa ja Vesi Oy (Soil and Water Ltd.), Kaavakartta Oy, Mittaus-
tekniikka Oy, T:mi Erikoiskartta, and Photometra Oy.
The research directed to the applications of photointerpretation and
the use of these applications have greatly increased in forest research,
geology, ore prospecting, hydrology, and environmental protection.
The Forest Research Institute, the Geological Research Institute, Rauta-
ruukki Oy, the Universities of Technology in both Helsinki and Tampere,
as well as the Institutes or Departments of Geography, Forestry and Geology
of the Universities of Helsinki; Oulu and Turku have been the most
important users and investigators of photointerpretation. Moreover, the
governmental organizations and private companies mentioned above have
been important users.
The extensive arrangements for the XIII International Congress for
Photogrammetry in 1976 have played an important role during this past
term in Finland. Considering the size of our country, the preparations
for the Congress have demanded an enormous effort of the National Society
of Photogrammetry as well as of the persons who have participated in the
arrangements. It might be proper, in this connection, to thank all private
persons and collective bodies that have contributed to the success of
the Congress.
The following information has been collected from the annual reports
published by the National Society.
