SECTION 4
EDUCATION
This section is divided into entries for each University or College offering
substantial specialised courses in photogrammetry, a list of institutions which
include photogrammetry as a subsidiary subject and entries for the major
employers who are also concerned with photogrammetric education.
The main development during the four year period has been the introduction of
courses for senior technicians leading to Higher National Certificates in survey-
ing, cartography and planning: the first certificates involving specialisation in
photogrammetry were awarded in 1974. In addition to the two colleges which
offer photogrammetry at HNC level and which have full entries below, some 16
colleges offer courses for Ordinary or Higher National Certificates in surveying
or cartography, in which some photogrammetry is taught.
Institutions offering substantial specialised courses in photogrammetry
UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW - Department of Geography
The postgraduate Diploma course in photogrammetry continues to run with small
numbers. Ph D and M Sc students are accepted and have worked on several of
the research projects mentioned in Section 3 of this Report. Photogrammetry
continues to be taught in detail as an integral part of the B Sc degree in
topographic science and as a special option course offered to geography under-
graduates. A short course in remote sensing has been introduced for students
on all of these courses.
KINGSTON COLLEGE OF FURTHER EDUCATION - Department of General
Studies
Photogrammetry related to topographic mapping forms part of the course for
Ordinary National Certificate in surveying, cartography and planning. At Higher
National Certificate level, photogrammetry can be taken as a main course or as
part of a cartographically oriented course. The main course includes a greater
emphasis on practical skills. Additional short courses are offered for photo-
grammetric technicians employed in local mapping organisations and to students
from other disciplines such as traffic engineering, geography and geology.
UNIVERSITY OF LONDON:
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON, Department of Photogrammetry and Surveying
The period under review saw the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the chair of
photogrammetry and surveying (141), which remains the only one of its kind in
the United Kingdom. In 1972, Professor E H Thompson was made an honorary
member of the International Society for Photogrammetry and in 1973, with the
approval of Her Majesty the Queen, he was awarded the Patron's Medal of the
Royal Geographical Society. As a result of the generous response to the
Martin Hotine Memorial Fund, it was possible in 1972 to institute an annual
award, the Hotine Exhibition, to promising postgraduate students of surveying
and photogrammetry at University College London. The Standing Committee of
the Commonwealth Survey Officers' Conference is represented on the selection
committee for the award.
