7. To use Landsat imagery for preparatory work for the
scheduled 1979 Census
8. To study urban places, if cloud-free imagery over cities
become available.
Two technical advisers were sent to Kenya to develop classification
systems, ground truth programs, underflights, etc.
In November 1974, a Remote Sensing Demography and Current Land
Use Project agreement was negotiated with Bolivia. The project is
collaborating with the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica (INE) and
the Instituto Geografico Militar (IGM). Training programs have been
conducted in PaPaz and in the United States. The specific objective
of developing adequate base maps for census operations from Landsat |
images, especially in the lowlands which comprise almost two-thirds of i
the country, has top priority among project activities. The fact that
Bolivia plans to take a census during 1976, during the life of the
project, also distinguishes this project from those in the other two
countries.
BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS
Arthur Woll
Orthophoto quads of Indian reservations are being prepared from
high altitude aerial photography (1:80,000 scale). These base maps
are used as a basis for preparing overlays to map and inventory
natural resources, land use, hydrology, ownership, transportation, etc.
Mapping of all major Indian holdings except Alaska will be funded by
the end of Fiscal Year 1977. A case study on the Colville Indian
Reservation in eastern Washington will evaluate these maps and a
computerized resource information system (Natural Resources Information
System - NRIS). This will result in a comprehensive plan with a j |
presentation of land use and consideration of natural resource
alternatives leading to implementation of the tribal land use plans.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs is conducting a NASA funded appli-
cation research project in the highly productive forest lands of the
Pacific Northwest (State of Washington). The project involves testing
the reliability of automated interpretations of forest lands from
original Landsat digital data. Forest cover has been successfully
classified by species composition (elder, Douglas fir, hemlock, and
cedar), burned areas, size and age (as shown by areas that have trees
restocking).
