Approximately 58 percent of the dollar value for products at the
center is for Landsat data. The customer profile for purchase of all
data shows that private industry is the largest single purchaser, with
30 percent of the total dollar value, and agencies of the. Federal
Government coming next with 24 percent. Academic and educational
institutions account for 16 percent of data sales,
customers comprise 12 percent. Individuals, state,
ment agencies comprise the remainder.

Users of the Landsat data have demonstrated a myriad of
applications, some expected, many unexpected. Because the applica-
tions are so numerous it is not possible to treat them comprehensively
in this text. Accordingly, this discussion is limited to listings and
examples. Further, while the discussions are broken largely on a
discipline basis many applications span two or more disciplines and
hence this part of the report is not sectionalized.
Cartographically, the data from Landsat have far exceeded
expectations and, properly processed, are proving more timely and in
other ways superior to conventional line maps for a variety of uses.
Additionally, the repetitive nature of Landsat data is leading to a
new and vital cartographic capability--mapping the dynamics of the
Earth's surface. In many economic applications, such as the manage-
ment of water and grazing lands, the dynamics of water and forage
availability are of equal or more significance than the basic loca-
tion information available on conventional line maps. It is also
significant that approximately 90 percent of the Earth's land surface
is now covered by images acquired from Landsat.
