Summary
The Report of the Working Group IV/1 Highway and Railway Engi-
neering, of the ISP to the XIII Congress in Helsinki in 1976 con-
sists of two parts. The first part is a review of the activity
of the Working Group since 1960 together with a survey of the
present status of the application of Photogrammetry, Digital
Terrain Model and Semiautomated Photogrammetrical Mapping to
Highway and Railway Planning and Design. It is stated that the
photogrammetric technique today generally is regarded as a con-
ventional aid for the acquisition of topographic data for plan-
ning and design, but the level of application varies in diffe-
rent countries. The importance of forming simple and logical
systems of the combination of photogrammetry, photointerpreta-
tion surveying, data processing and automatic plotting is again
emphasized. The introduction of and training in the modern
technique are also important factors for a successful result.
Many different DTM-systems have been developed based upon diffe-
rent opinions on the interpolation technique but in most count-
ries the application of the DTM-technique has been more devoted
to the design of residential and industrial areas, airports, road
interchanges, than to Highway and Railway Planning and Design.
The Semiautomated Photogrammetric Mapping is still in a develo-
ping phase and practical application to planning and design is
limited up til now.
The second part of the report consists of edited contributions
concerning the application of photogrammetry and DTM to Highway
and Railway Planning and Design in Mexico, Australia, Sweden,
Japan together with contributions on the DTM-technique from USA
and Austria.
Finally the report contains the summary of an invited paper on
Photogrammetrical point determination of the track suveying
from Germany.
