Department of Housing and Construction, Australian Government
This Department is the construction authority for highway and
airport services controlled by the National Government. These
cover airports in all States and Territories plus roads in the
Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. Photo-
grammetric services are provided for this Department by the
Australian Survey Office, which has responsibility for all
"project" photogrammetry for the Australian Government and is
quite separate from the Division of National Mapping.
This Department is presently doing some road design work using
longitudinal and cross sections obtained by field survey and
supplied on magnetic tape. There is no immediate intention to
use photogrammetrically acquired data in design work.
Photogrammetric information is used for location purposes, par-
ticularly for roads in the Northern Territory which is served 0
in this regard by a Branch of the Australian Survey Office in
Darwin.
National Capital Development Commission
This Commission is the planning authority for the National Capi-
tal in Canberra and plans the detailed development of that city
and surroundings, including the road system. Extensive usage is
made by the Commission of photogrammetric data produced by the
Australian Survey Office in this detailed planning. Such data
includes Orthophotos.
Commonwealth Railways
This Authority is responsible for the location, design, construc-
tion, maintenance and operation of railway facilities controlled ®
by the Australian Government, including non-metropolitan railways
in South Australia and all railways in the Northern Territory.
During the past four years, the Australian Survey Office has per-
formed an extensive mapping project for this authority for the
proposed Tarcoola-Alice Springs railway. The basic scale was
1:24 000 with a contour interval of 10 feet. The distance cove-
red was some 820 km, of which all but the first 160 km were done
by photogrammetry. The strip width varied but was generally about
3 km. Preliminary design is being done from these maps.
Other Railway Authorities
As stated under the initial heading of railway authorities, the
usage of photogrammetric methods by railway authorities is rather
less than that by highway authorities. The reason is that much
less railway development is being undertaken than highway develop-
ment. It is known, however, that some usage is made by some rail-
way authorities in relation to the design of improvements to per- E
menent way and to installations and property under the contro]
of those autnorities.
