Fig 3 is an example of automated contour mapping by Pacific Aerial
Survey Co., and Asahi Optics Co. Combination of contour line with
character and other symbols is still under development.
Mr Kengo Asakura developed a new software system by using dot map
system to produce contour map combined with chinese character,
boundaries and any other legend.
Fig 4 shows computer generated dot map using IBM computer and dot
printer.
Further development in the dot map system will be expected because
of simpleness of the data structure.
SUMMARY
As Japan is under quite different environmental circumstances from
Europe and America, application of photogrammetry and digital ter-
rain model to highway and railway design is directed to non-engi-
neering field, while it is well developed in other field of earth
design.
Land evaluation and management of land resources combined with pho-
togrammetry and DTM will be of great interest in Japan.
In this sense the digital terrain model can be replaced by the digi-
tal land information model.
