indicating water qualities is also well established (cf. Figure 8).
Synoptic views of sedimentation patterns in an estuary, or of tidal fronts and
boundaries between zones of different water quality, are of immense value in
understanding the processes of erosion and sedimentation, the dispersion of
pollutants and the patterns of ocean current. The Arctic is an area of intense oil
and gas exploration; engineering and ecological problems are immense and
information and experience fall well short of what may be required if we should
some day be confronted with an oil spill. However, among our information sources,
