Abstract 
With respect to annotating and image segmentation software 
engineering did not keep abreast of the recent progress in 
digital image analysis research. PODIUM is a proposal for 
how this gap might be filled in. This presentation outlines 
the system design. 
1. Introduction 
Analysing multi-spectral image data on digital computers 
often is rather severely limited by the fact that the data 
transfer to or from main storage does not make use of the 
available resources in an optimum manner and the image 
file organizations neglect up-to-date techniques because 
usually scientists are not computer specialists.
