possible. The editors did their best to find an acceptable
solution. The conference language was English as it was not
possible to provide simultaneous translation for budgetary
reasons. Manuscripts have been accepted in one of the official
languages of both organizations, English, French and German.
English abstracts of the papers (if available) are additionally
reproduced in cases where the manuscripts are written in French
or German and the abstract is not included in the text. Because
of the limited availability of funds it was necessary to reduce
the format of the publication and the number of photographs,
mainly concerning coloured illustrations. The reader may excuse
some lack of uniformity and sometimes also a loss of information
which could not be avoided because of the above-mentioned
restrictions. Thanks to all colleagues who have contributed
manuscripts.
We acknowledge with gratitude the support and encouragement
received from the various sponsors for the organization of the
symposium and the publication of these proceedings. The arrange-
ment of the numerous sessions, excursions, and social events
as well as the preparation of this publication would not have
been possible without the active assistance and support by the
University of Freiburg, the Katholische Akademie in Freiburg,
municipal authorities of Freiburg, several firms, agencies and
institutes and last not least the members of the symposium
committee. We also would like to thank all of them.
