Measurements
The measurements of the pattern areas and the ground floor
space have been made using an areal pollet shown in figure
1. The above measurements have been calibrated to the total
areals and ground floor space of the traffic zones, which
were measured separately and independently in the preliminary
interpretation, This was done in order to avoid the accumulat-
ion of measuring errors,
In order to etimate the population growth and the change in
land use between 1975 (census year) and 1977 ground floor
space and the main land use distribution (in 4 cathegories)
were measured both from 1975 and 1976 material,
The measurement of the average number of stories was done with
a special procedure, in which the use of stereoscopic viewing
of aerial photos was essential. It is difficult to Say whether
this procedure is à procedure of measurement or an estimat-
ion procedure, The measurements were done in the actual pat-
tern in the field identifying a sufficient number of buildings
both in the terrain and in the photos. Having the direct field
observations as calibration points the average number of
Stories within a pattern was estimated by determining the per-
centage of the ground floor space belonging to each height
class of buildings, for example:
- 10% 35 stories
- 20% 2 stories
- 70% 1 stories
average 1,4 stories
The total floor space of the pattern was calculated a 'ording
to this and ihe measured ground floor Space,
