information at the species composition level or
plant community level.
The vegetation coverage created for the Apostle
Island National Lakeshore is not limited to the
applications demonstrated above. It can be used
as basic natural research data and for providing
relevant information for various management
needs.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
We gratefully acknowledge Emmet J.
Judziewicz, for his efforts in this project. He
reviewed all the draft maps and text, and helped
establish the vegetation classification schema.
We greatly thank Ms. Julie F. Van Stappen, at
National Park Service Apostle Island National
Lakeshore, for her help with the vegetation
classification schema and logistic support in
ground truthing field work and Mr. Joseph
Meyer at Midwest Region GIS Technical
Support Center, National Park Service for his
coordination and technical support. We thank
David J. Mladenoff and Ben Sherman, at
University of Wisconsin-Madison, for reviewing
the manuscript and for automating Emmet's
survey plots respectively.
