Another such basic factor is the contrast of the detail. For the 
purposes of this discussion the photographic definition of contrast is 
used, namely, the log brightness ratio of the detail to its background. 
Work by Carman and Carruthers and others has established evi- 
dence that the contrasts of significant ground detail in all class groups 
is extremely low. Figure 2 indicates such a typical distribution of 
detail contrasts at ground level as a function of the frequency of their 
occurrence. This data indicates that about 90% of all detail exists at 
contrasts of 0.1 or less. This appraisal may turn out to be pessimistic 
because of the size of scanning slit used in the determinations, but
