3. Operating means
The interpretation of photogrammetric photographs can at
present be automated only to & low degree. Therefore the
operator cannot be replaced in stereoplotting, He views
the partial images of stereopairs using optical means for
image separation. His efficiency is decisively impaired,
when interruptions are permanently enforced by manual input
operations on a video terminal, Although it is in principle
possible to implement all operating functions with the
standard and function keys of a video terminal, special
operating means prove to be expedient. This is especially
à double foot switch, with which the operator can release
instructions without interrupting the stereoscopic viewing.
The measuring points are allocated to two groups or two
states (e.g. pen up/pen down) and the possibility exists
to group measuring points into measurement series, whose
beginning or conclusion are identified by using the second
foot switch. Thus, the operator can process en bloc objects
of the same kind (e.g. buildings) with a fixed sequence
of mapping instructions (rectangularity, parallelism,
hachure) and hence get along without the operation of the
video terminal for a longer period. Two different acoustic
signals acknowledge the input functions. In photogrammetric
data acquisition there is normally a great number of object
features, of which some combinations occur particularly
frequently. This will also correspond to a specific sequen-
ce of drawing commands, which are expediently summarized
into macro instructions. Operating means are also necessary
to provide the possibility for the operator to change
frequently between these macro instructions without necessi-
tating a larger equipment outlay, A menu may for example
be displayed on the screen without additional hardware
and the operator chooses the desired instruction sequence
with a character key or in the case of a lower number of
macros with a function key. An advantageous solution, in
which the cartographic symbol to be represented is used
for the designation of macros, is obtained when a programm-
able additional keyboard is employed, for which standard lay-
out symbols can be stored in the computer and called up.
Each standard leyout requires a corresponding mask to be
made for the additional keyboard. For a very large quantity
of cartographic symbols a digitizing table may be used,
within which the operator positions a cursor in a field.
Here agein special masks are used for different mapping
tasks and scales.
