ABSTRACT
The Study is a collaboration effort between the state agency for social development (SEDESOL -
Taumalipas) and the Autonomous University of Taumalipas to support ecological planning statewide. A
general reference of land use changes during twenty years (1972-1992) has been generated using remote
sensing and geographic information systems. For both dates LANDSAT Multispectral Scanner Images
(MSS) will be used. Comparisons will be made to the extent and relative changes in land occupation and
ecosystems between the two dates. This comparative analysis will allow detection of environmental
degradation caused by different natural resource utilization schemes. The purpose is to search for
solutions which incorporate social and economic aspects in addition to the ecological ones to develop the
scenarios under which economic development will occur without irreversible environmental damages.
