ABSTRACT
The region of Tramandaf, RS (30°0S, 50°W) suffers environmental impacts coming from different
sources. The rice irrigation, the discharge of domestic waste water in the coastal lakes and the destruction
of dunes for urban expansion purposes are existing problems which can be observed. The consequences
of the mining of pit-coal, which deposits lay under the continental platform in this portion of the coast,
are up to now unknown. For the monitoring of the area a GIS-Database containing basic cartographic
data (topography, hydrology, geology, soils, etc.) was built. Data layers coming from the image
processing of Landsat TM scenes were also added to the database. These information allowed the
generation of a preliminary map of environmental units for the region. A map showing the attraction of
the region for tourisms was also generated. Best suited ares should receive detailed studies regarding is
carrying capacity for this purpose.
