ABSTRACT
NOAA satellite data in south seas of Java island recorded on Sepiember 29, 1990 were combined with
RV Baruna Jaya I data taken from two cruises (March 5 - April 2, 1990) and August 23 - September 30,
1990) for upwelling pattem identifications. Te upwelling processes may be identified by a low sea
surface temperature and a high surface sigma-t value. À high surface sigma-t value will reduce the value
if geopotential anomaly. Qualitatively, the upwelling areas may b: identified through the classification
method implemented in the NOAA digital imagery, the water mass analysis and analysis of geopotential
anomaly. The upwelling velocity may also be quantitatively calculated using the Hidaka method. The
upwelling processes were identified in the southem coast of Baryuwangi, East Java with an average
velocity of 0.049 cm/second, in the off shore-dee sea areas south seas of Java island, with an average
velocity of 0.034 cm/second, and in the southeastern part of Cilacap, Central Java with an average
velocity of 0.1777 cm/second. The upwelling processes were ideritified occurring during the month of
April to August.
