SATELLITE DETECTION AND ANAL YSIS OF URBAN SPATIAL 
GROWTH REGIMES IN ILE-IFE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT 
SPOT Satellite data was used to monitor the urban environment and spatial growth regimes of the 
traditional Nigerian City of Ile-Ife. Three regimes of spatial pattern of land use developments were 
identified: 
Pre-Colonial, Colonial, land Post Colonial. The urban land use characteristics of each regime was 
analysed and the environmental planning and policy implications of the results were discussed.
