ABSTRACT
The purpose is to develop technology which can enable the use of navigation supporting equipment.
The topics to be treated are:
e Sea charts conversion into digital models, using Mercator projection in terms of latitudes and longitudes.
« Databases criation with notable points to the navigator.
e From the digital sea charts, it is possible to elaborate software which will help decision making and which
will give several information such as: present position, direction, distance between two points, best ruote ,
symbols convention and so forth.
e The interaction between this software and certain apparatus based on the GPS (Global Position System)
technology, shall make the navigation through automatic pilot possible.
The conclusion is that the navigator needs to be able to safely locate himself; he must know the depth of the
place where he is; he has to be alerted to problems which may happen when choosing a course; he needs to
know in advance how long is the trip going to last, and many other items which can make navigation faster and
more efficient.
