ABSTRACT
The advent of satellite remote sensing technology has made resources survey easy with availability of synoptic view, multispectral nature
and repetitive coverage. Remote sensing technique is the suitable tool to study coastal geomorphology and land use /land cover details
that change through time. The study area, Manori creek in Mumbai coastal region is lying in between the latitude 19°10’ to 19°20’ and
longitude 72°46’ to 72°55". It starts from Vasai Creek in the north to Malad creek in the south. The present work aims at interpreting
different coastal geomorphological landforms and land use /land cover details in this region with help of remotely sensed data and
analyse the changes over the period of 30 years (i.e. 1966-1996). The coastal geomorphology and land-use/land-cover of Manori creek
was studied for three different time periods using topographic sheet (1966), Landsat TM (1988) and IRS -1C satellite (1996) data.
Different geomorphic units like sandy beach, rocky beach, coastal low-land, mudflat, linear ridge, beach ridges, shallow pediment,
coastal plain and stacks were delineated with help of visual and as well as through digital image processing of satellite data. The study
has shown that there is a drastic reduction of area of mudflat and mangroves in contrast to increment of built-up lands and fallow lands
due to rapid growth of urbanization.
1. INTRODUCTION
qu
Coastal landforms are those that are influenced and controlled m "s
by proximity to the sea. Such landforms are continuously us E
modifying or changing by various factors like erosion, transport = UME MALI
and deposition by waves, tides and currents. As population 2 X at "
growth and industrial and recreational activity continues in . MUMBAI
coastal zones, the environment is continuously deteriorated.
The mapping and monitoring of coastal geomorphology and
land use/ land cover is almost important to understand the
coastal processes and thus help towards better management of
coastal environment. Monitoring provides information about
the condition of our estuarine and coastal areas and the \ X

resources. As pressures on our coastal areas intensify, new T
approaches to environmental monitoring will be required, here 9
remote sensing and GIS techniques play a major role in JA vos

In the last two decades, the role of remote sensing in coastal
studies is significant (Subramaniyan 1986, Anand et.al 1987
and Shaikh etal 1989). Nair (1987) has done coastal Figure 1- Ligation Mar of Manor Cresk, Mus:

into different categories based on their vulnerability and
