The land use and land cover change in Manori creek region
over the period of 30 years were analyzed with help of
topographic sheets and satellite data. The area under mudflat is
gradually decreased from 1966 to 1988 and to 1996. Overall,
the wetland area has been decreased from 61.65 sq.km (in
1966) to 30.22 sq.km (in 1966). On the contrary, the area under
saltpan is increased from 4.3 sq.km to 13.7 sq.km. The
mangroves associated with the mudflat in Manori Creek are
decreased and proportionately the barren land, fallow land and
built-up land were increased. Similarly, the creek zone has
reduced from 10.8 sq.km to 5.6 sq.km in 1996.
CONCLUSION
The portion of the sandy beach is proportionally increased from
1966 to 1996. This has indicated that the currently depositional
process is active in Manori creek region. The study has clearly
shown that there is a drastic reduction of wetland environment
in contrast to increment of saltpan, fallow lands, barren land
and built-up lands due to rapid growth of urbanization in last
eight years (1988-1996). The steadily decline of mangroves
associated with the mudflats in the Manori Creek region needs
immediate protection.
