that this has much effect. Will Mr. Somebody ever receive these news ? My
experience with communication through National Correspondents is frustrating
in most countries. The idea of channeling through 'Photogrammetria' is not
any better as Tons as this periodical has a print run of 1 ooo. Consequently,
an ISPRS Bulletin being distributed free of charge to Mr. Somebody seems to
be by far the best. I am aware this is an academic point as long as we do not
Solve the financial implications. But FIG solved the problem, so why can't we !'
3s a practical approach, I wonder whether we should at least consider an
ISPRS Newsletter arrangement with the ITC Journal (reaching 6 ooo Mr.Somebodies,
ISTE of them not disposing on foreign currency) and with PERS (reaching
11 ooo subscribers). The most important part seems to me having an energetic
and devoted Editor for the ISPRS Bulletin. The Secretary General has to cope
with too many other engagements.
Mr. Coker (Nigeria): There is no publication in Africa on photogrammetry and
remote sensing. The place for this should be the Regional Centre for Training
in Aerial Surveys (RECTAS), Ile -Ife, Nigeria, which is a sister institution
to the ITC and the only one of its kind in Africa offering courses in photo-
grammetry to nationals of all African countries.
President Com.VI Hothmer (FR Germany) : Commission VI has undertaken quite
some attempts to initiate a Regional International Periodical (RIP) on Photo-
grammetry and Remote Sensing for Africa in pursuance with recommendations of
the Congress 1980 Hamburg. There was no success with the intermediate of the
African Association of Cartography. RECTAS is certainly most welcome to
implement RIP - Africa according to the guidelines as published at tho Hamburg
Congress.
Prof.Konencny (FR Germany) : There is a need for a RIP for each region,
Ms.Ann Stewart (Netherlands) : The Secretary General ISPRS does not see much
sense for a separate ISPRS - Newsletter. Picking up the idea of RIP it may be
worth considering Regional Newsletters for Africa, Asia etc.
Dr. Ihemadu (Nigeria): Switching to the general survey of publication of
Scientific and technical journals by J.R.Richardson of UNESCO, as far as I
can see at this moment not sufficient justice has been done to relevant publi-
cations by African Universities, which have not been mentioned.
Prof. Hothmer (FR Germany): I imagine the statistics in this UNESCO survey
are based on responses from the countries themselves. You may therefore wish
to contact your country reporter proposing to supply more relevant details
to UNESCO.
Mr. Glendinning (Australia) : I want to return to the substantive paper of
Morris Thompson. We are discussing here how to package our data. If we have
to change, then we should. I think we need a drastic change.
Secretary General ISPRS Konecny (FR Germany) : The discussion was very stimu-
lating. We have a ISPRS Publications Policy Committee with the assignment to
look into the future. We sincerely wish them success.
President Com.VI Hothmer (FR Germany) : I think I should add that Working
Group VI- 11 on Symbols for Publications has been established with Dr. J.
Pietschner (Germany, Democratic Republic) as Chairman, having been approved
by his Government. Unfortunately, Dr.Pietschner can not participate at this
Symposium, and he did not deliver any report on activities of his WG.
