ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
This study is being conducted in cooperation with
Professor E. J. Cording, of the Department of Civil
Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-
Champaign, as a part of a study on tunnel design and
construction which is being supported by the U.S. De-
partment of Transportation. All the soil tests on the
tunnel models are being conducted under the direction
of Professor Cording. Mr P Lenzini, a graduate student
in Civil Engineering, played a major role in the de-
sign of the tunnel model; and Mr S.W. Hong, a graduate
research assistant, is currently responsible for con-
ducting the tests and for analysis of the gauge
measurements.
