Ladies and Gentlemen
It is my pleasant duty and it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this mid-Congress
International Symposium of Commission VI, International Society of Photogrammetry and
Remote Sensing (ISPRS), the theme of which is, ‘photogrammetry and remote sensing in econo-
mic development.
The ISPRS, founded in 1910, is a non-governmental scientific organisation devoted to the
development of international cooperation for the advancement of photogrammetry and remote
sensing and their applications. Its activities are initiated and coordinated by 7 Technical Commi-
ssions, each charged with specific subjects defined under the Constitution of the Society. Each
Commission establishes its own Working Groups to conduct studies and research into topics
within the spectrum of subjects under its responsibility. The programme of activities of the
Commissions are implemented and the results disseminated through correspondence, discussions
and lectures at meetings of the Working Groups, the mid-Congress Symposia of the Commissions
and the quadrennial Congress of the Society.
Nigeria is entrusted with the tasks of Commission V1, (Education, Economics and Professional
Aspects) for the period 1984 — 1988. These tasks are implemented through the Working Groups
established by the Commission Board.
The objective of this Symposium is to review the work of the Commission and identify other
areas where additional work may be required.
Photogrammetry and remote sensing is a fast, efficient and dynamic tool for mapping which
is basic for all development planning and implementation. Natural Resource data are obtainined
on a continuous basis for inventory, exploration and their exploitation from remotely sensed
imageries.
An appraisal of our present economic problems calis for solutions which to my mind are
basic and fundamental. We need an up to date inventory of available reousrces, a re-assessment
and re-ordering of priorities, proper and systematic planning and prudent management of these
resources. To do this effectively the establishment of a Resource Information and Dats Manage-
ment Centre should be a major priority. We should therefore exploit the opportunities of hosting
this Symposium and other subsequent activities of the Commission for the improvement of
niis and th expansion and further development of the technology locally.
