Two kinds of maps are produced from the digitized data, the preliminary map at the 
scale of 1:5 000 and the management map 1:10 000 as a compilation of the preliminary maps. 
The production does not run long enough to give definite figures on the time saved by 
the automatic procedure compared to manual drawing. To give a rough idea about the time spent 
for digitizing and drawing, it took 8 hours to digitize a sheet of 50 x 50 cm? 1:5 000 including 
a cartographic touch up afterwards and about 1 hour to process and draw the map. 
Regardless of the savings in time which will come out in the end, there remains the 
advantage of saving skilled draughtsmen which are scarce nowadays. This advantage alone 
justifies the further application and development of the automatic procedure. 
At the conclusion there remains to say that there is hardly an application to be found 
for orthophotography which gives so much credit to this method. I dare to say there exist no 
alternative to orthophotography in forest inventory and mapping because it seems impossible to 
survey on the ground all the small details of forests in a terrain covered with wood which may 
easily be identified on an orthophoto.

Depuis quelques années le service forestier de Rheinland-Pfalz emploie des orthophotographies dans le domaine 
de l'aménagement forestier. Les orthophotographies sont employées comme plan-minute pendant les travaux sur le 
terrain, comme base pour produire ou mettre à jour des cartes forestiéres ou comme photoplan au lieu d'une carte 
forestiére normale. 
En utilisant une machine à dessiner automatique la production des cartes forestiéres est accélérée. Les données 
pour dessiner sont obtenues par une digitalisation de la situation forestiére sur les orthophotographies et des limites de 
propriétés sur les cartes cadastrales. 
Summary 
In the federal state Rheinland-Pfalz orthophoto technique is applied to a large extent in forest inventory and 
mapping. The orthophotos are used as field documents as base for producing or updating forest maps or as photomap 
instead of a standard line map. Production of maps may be raised when digitizing the forest situation in the orthophotos 
and using an electronic plotter for drawing. 
Zusammenfassung 
Seit einigen Jahren werden in Rheinland-Pfalz in grósserem Umfange Orthophotos in der Forsteinrichtung 
verwandt. Neben der Verwendung als Arbeitsluftbild im Felde dient das Orthophoto als Unterlage zur Herstellung bzw. 
Berichtigung der Forstkarten und zur Fláchenberechnung. In einigen Landesteilen ist es ausserdem als Luftbildkarte 
an die Stelle der üblichen Forstkarten getreten. Durch die Digitalisierung des Orthophotos in Verbindung mit der 
Katasterkarte und anschliesse der maschineller Zeichnung wird die Herstellung der Forstkarten beschleunigt.

signalisation ? 
R. KERSTING - Yes it is done in flat terrain. Else is not any signalisation necessary because the white plastic boundary 
marks are visible on the photos.
