ABSTRACT
The Remote Sensing Department of the Institute of Geodesy and
Cartography was established in Hungary with the major aim to call
into existence a nationwide Support Center for Applied Remote Sen-
sing /SCARS/. The scope and function of the department is discussed
from four aspects namely user service, extension efforts, public
relations and research+development as well. The SCARS - supported
by the the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Office for Techni-
cal Development as well as the Intercosmos Council of the
Hungarian Academy of Sciences - will be fully operational after
1985. Some of the present investigations, application programs will
be presented by colour slides.

First of all, let's introduce the.host institute for the futu-
re Support Center for Applied Remote Sensing /SCARS/. The Institute
of Geodesy and Cartography /IGEC/ directed by the National Office
of Lands and Mapping at the Ministry of Agriculture concentrates
on four major areas of interest namely on map service, automatiza-
tion of surveying, satellite geodesy and remote sensing applica-
tions.
The Remote Sensing Department /RSD/ was established in 1981 as a
continuation and extension of the research activity, which had
started in the Satellite Geodetic Observatory of the same institu-
te some years ago.
The work of the department is based on two laboratories belonging
to it, financially supported by tne Ministry of Agriculture, the
National Office for Technical Development and the Intercosmos
Council of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The aim of the work
is to develop in all of its complexity a nationwide Support Center
for Applied Remote Sensing. It is at this time in experimental
stage and will be fully operational in 1985. Besides some user ser-
vice and public relations activity, the work is presently focused
on the establishment of the SCARS and on research+development/fig.l/.
USER SERVICES
As far as the user support is concerned, the RSD
- acquires, archives and distributes aerial photographs , airborne
IR scanner data and space imagery on commercial basis,
- informs users on data availability, distributes data products,
- tailors application software to the particular requirements of
the user, provides continuous consultancy as required,
