Due to the inherent advantages of different data and evaluation procedures, the
combination provides a very powerful tool to econ omically meet the requirements for
many problems. Aerial photographs are routinely used as ground information for the
selection of training areas in LANDSAT data for land use mapping and verification of the
results, The supervised classification of LANDSAT data can provide a land use map
for vast areas, sufficient for planning purposes on a statelevel. Where more detailed
information is needed, e.g. in metropolitan areas, photointerpretation of aerial:
photographs would be suitable and costeffective, since only comparatively small areas
are to be evaluated.
