3. Association of
loamy soils
ET a
formed by the combination of:
Union of rape seed and green manure (I) and root crops (II)
and arable land 2 (II).
- The union of all land-use types characteristic for
better soils.
Error: to & small extent, green manure and
root crops occur on sandy soils.
4, Grassland
land with green manure (II).
Intersection of grassland and young cereals (I) and grass-

- This results in a preciser definition and narrowing-down.
Error: the intersection of young cereals (I) and green
manure (II) is classified as grassland.

QTO; Built up

residential area (I).
- The purpose is to unite all areas not relevant for soil
survey.
When combining two classifications, the sequence of the operations is important:
Union of industrial area (I) and industrial area (II) and
those spectral classes, which are most relevant for soil survey, should be
processed at the beginning, because pixels, which have already received a
classification cannot be re-classified upon further work.
When looking at the results of
combination (photo 12) and at
the interpretation map (map 2),
an interesting distribution of
important soil associations can
be discerned, which is useful
for a small-scale pedologic
regionalisation of the Neu-
münster area. Areas of glacial
outwash and glacial drainageways
are clearly distinet form loamy
morainic material. Transitio-
nal areas show by a mixture of
the colours representing loamy
and sandy classes. Further
information is contained by the
distribution of sandpits, co-
niferous forest, peat cuttings
and grassland according to the
principle of analogy, as explained
previously
Although this method does not
replace detailed mapping of
particular area, it serves to
improve upon existing general
