Landsat imagery are used to calculate runoff in the Wen Yu He River, 
the 1:500,000 scale geologic map and illustrate of plant classification are 
referenced, thi¥ty representative small basins are selected, the remote sen- 
sing information are plenty, the geology, geomorphology, forest, vegetation 
cover are classified, then runoff” are calculated in the typical basin, subs- 
titube runoff coefficient into corresponding region of the Wen Yu He River, 
runoff is calculated, its area is 1800 km“, the accuracy of calculated runoff 
can be reached 88%, this is a good method for the region where the hydro- 
logic data are lacking it also shows that the layout of hydrometric station 
should consider tkeloguditions of geology, geomorphology, and vegetation oo- 
ver instead of topography as the only consideration, Thus the number of hydro- 
metric station may be reduced, and the calculated runoff more accurate in 
regions where the hydrologic data are lacking,considering different runoff 
characteristics in different zone of geology and geomorphology. One Landsat 
image covers an area of 185 km“ on the ground, its sight is wide, it can dis- 
play more complete imagery of the earth, such as: geology, lineament, geomor- 
phology, river system, water boby, etc, ; .
